As a team the Yankees hit .300 and 182 HRs which was 59 more HRs than the closest team Cleveland Indians. The Yankees pitching staff led the league with a 4.17 team ERA. With Babe Ruth gone, the Yankees leaned on Lou Gehrig to lead them. Gehrig hit 49 HRs and had a .354 batting average. Billy Dickey led the team with a .362 batting average and pitched in 22 HRs. The Yankees had 4 more players hit over .300 including rookie outfielder Joe DiMaggio who hit .323 and belted 29 HRs, second behind Gehrig.

The Yankees had only 1 pitcher post 20 wins. Red Ruffing led the team with 20 wins and a 3.85 ERA. Monte Pearson won 19 and led the team with a 3.71 ERA. The remaining 3 starting pitchers, Broaca, Gomez and Hadley each won 12, 13 and 14 games respectfully.

The Yankees would face off against their cross town rivals from the National League, New York Giants in the 1936 World Series. The 1936 Giants were led by manager Bill Terry. The Giants won the 1936 National League pennant by 5 games over the St Louis Cardinals. The Giants hit only 97 HRs in 1936 which was nearly 100 less than the Yankees but still good enough for second in the National League. As a team, the Giants hit .281. The Giants pitching staff boasted a league low 3.46 ERA. The Giants were led by outfielder Mel Ott who belted 33 HRs and hit .328. The Giants had two more players hit over .300, Gus Mancuso at .301 and Jo-Jo Moore at .316. Jimmy Ripple and player/manager Bill Terry hit over .300 in limited action.

Carl Hubbell won 26 games and boasted a league low 2.31 ERA as the Giants ace in 1936. No other Giants pitcher won more than 14 games in 1936.

The first game of the 1936 World Series was played at the Polo Grounds. The Giants took an early series 1 game with a 6-1 win. Pitcher Carl Hubbell of the Giants dominated the Yankees hitters allowing 1 run on 7 hits over 9 innings. Red Ruffing for the Yankees gave up 6 runs on 9 hits over 8 innings and took the loss. George Selkirk accounted for the Yankees only run with a solo HR in the 3rd inning. The Giants got production from their 2nd, 3rd and 4th hitters as each collected 2 hits in the game. Dick Bartell hit the only HR for the Giants in the 5th inning and pitcher Carl Hubbell helped out with 2 hits of his own.

The second game of the 1936 World Series was also played at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees got out their whopping sticks for this game and beat up on the Giants by a score of 18-4. The Yankees pitcher Left Gomez allowed only 4 runs on 6 hits as the Yankees chased Giants starting pitcher Hal Schumacher after only 2 innings. The Yankees got hits from every player in the lineup and 5 RBIs each from catcher Bill Dickey and 2b Tony Lazzeri, both had HRs.

The Third game of the 1936 World Series moved to Yankee Stadium. Game 3 was a pitcher’s duel won by the Yankees pitcher Bump Hadley. Hadely surrendered 10 hits but only allowed 1 run over 8 innings. Pat Malone finished off the game by pitching in the 9th inning. Freddie Fitzsimmons of the Giants only allowed 4 Yankees hits but one of those hits was a solo HR by Lou Gehrig in the 2nd inning. The Yankees scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning when a Frankie Crosetti single scored Jake Powell.

The Yankees won the fourth game of the 1936 World Series played at Yankee Stadium 5-2 to take a commanding 3 games to 1 series lead. Giants pitching ace Carl Hubbell gave up 4 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings. Yankees pitcher Monte Pearson gave up only 2 runs in 9 innings of work. The Yankees Lou Gehrig hit the games only HR, a 2 run shot in the 3rd inning.

The fifth game of the 1936 World Series remained at Yankees Stadium as the Giants won a close 5-4 game in extra innings. The Giants jumped out to a 3 run lead in the first inning against Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing. The Yankees got a solo HR from George Selkirk in the 2nd and a single run in the 3rd to draw close at 3-2. The Giants plated another run in the 6th for a 4-2 lead but the Yankees tied it with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. The score remained tied at 4 until the top of the 10th when Bill Terry drove in Jo-Jo Moore on a sacrifice fly. The Yankees failed to score in the bottom of the 10th giving the Giants a much needed win. Giants pitcher Hal Schumacher pitched all 10 innings for the win and Yankees relief pitcher Pat Malone only gave up that lone 10th inning run but took the loss.

The sixth game of the 1936 World Series moved back to the Polo Grounds. The game was close before the Yankees broke out with 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning to win the game 13-5. Lefty Gomez got the win for the Yankees as Freddie Fitzsimmons took the loss. Mel Ott hit his only HR of the series as did Jo-Jo Moore. Jake Moore hit his only HR of the series for the Yankees.

The 1936 World Series was the 5th World Series Title for the New York Yankees. They were led by Rookie Joe DiMaggio who hit .346 for the series and veteran Lou Gehrig who hit 2 HRs. The Yankees got 2 wins from their ace Lefty Gomez and solid pitching from relievers Pat Malone and Johnny Murphy. The Giants were led by their star Dick Bartell who hit 1 HR and had a .381 batting average. Mel Ott added a HR and hit .304. Giants ace Carl Hubbell had one great outing and one not so great as he went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA. Hal Schumacher won the only other game for the Giants Pitching staff.
